The type of work we carry out
Wall Tie Replacement
Wall ties are essential for the stability of cavity walls. Prior to 1978, wall ties were normally manufactured from galvanised mild steel. These were expected to last the lifetime of the building, but for many years it has been recognised that some of these wall ties have corroded after only 15 or 20 years. When these ties corrode, they can expand up to seven times their original thickness. This then causes the brickwork to crack at the mortar joints (as seen in the image below) and can result in major damage and sometimes the collapse of walls.
Please contact us if you notice any of these symptoms -
- Vertical or horizontal cracks in the brickwork
- Bulging brickwork
- Cracks or separation of window reveals
- Lintels sagging
Over time weathering and decay cause voids in the joints between the brickwork, resulting in the entrance of water. Water entering these voids can cause significant damage through adverse weather conditions such as frost and heavy rain.
We use a dust extraction system for removal of damaged mortar, keeping the levels of dust to a minimum to avoid disruption to our customers and surrounding neighbours.
At Sandown Pointing and Wall Ties we offer a high standard of repointing finishes to suit the original structure of the building, these can be seen in our gallery.
When your external walls are exposed to water through wet weather conditions, this can enter your masonry, in most cases it will travel from the external walls to the internal walls, caused mainly by cracks in your brickwork or pointing. In addition to having your walls repointed, we also offer this service which will slow down the weathering process of the wall.
